Give your beloved furball the royal treatment with discounted luxury cat beds. From plush, doughnut beds to teepees, Black Friday is the perfect time to upgrade your cat’s comfort game without breaking the bank. To take a look at the current Black Friday offers for cat beds click here.

I’ve got my eye on some new sofas as the cats always seem to love them, these are similar to the ones currently in The Great Catsby!

Scratching Posts & Furniture

Cats love to stretch out and sharpen their claws. It’s not something they do just to keep their claws in check, it’s also good for their overall well-being. Having suitable places for cats to scratch is important and with these Black Friday offers on scratching posts you may be able to treat them to something special. Click here to view the Black Friday scratch post offers.

There are several large scratch posts in every room at The Great Catsby to give your cats a choice. But my own cats also love these for scratching and lounging around on.

Interactive Toys and Gadgets:

Keep your cat entertained for hours with cutting-edge interactive toys. Black Friday is an excellent opportunity to snag deals on laser toys, automated ball throwers, and puzzle feeders that will stimulate your cat’s mind and keep them active. Click here to see the interactive toys in the Black Friday deals.

I love puzzle feeders, they’re great for adding some enrichment to your cats life. But they’re also great for slowing down greedy guzzlers. My Nala is often sick when she eats too much too quickly so these are ideal. She is able to take her time concentrating on getting the food rather than eating it as quickly as possible.

Healthy Cat Food and Treats:

Invest in your cat’s health by taking advantage of Black Friday deals on high-quality cat food and treats. Many pet food brands offer special promotions and bundles during this time, making it a great opportunity to stock up on nutritious options for your feline friend. Here’s a round up of the Black Friday cat food offers Nows the time to stock up and make the most of those discounts, especially if your cat enjoys the more premium brands. These Black Friday offers won’t stay around for long. Or if you prefer a treat then I’m sure there’s a Black Friday deal your cat will love!

Smart Cat Accessories:

Embrace the future with smart cat accessories that make pet care more convenient. From automatic feeders to smart litter boxes, Black Friday offers the perfect opportunity to introduce technology into your cat’s routine.

Smart cat feeders are great for portioning out your cats food, I use the Catit Smart Feeder with my own cats but Amazon have a selection of smart feeders in the Black Friday promotions, click here to see them all.

If you’ve been thinking about a litter robot then Black Friday is the time to buy, with so many on offer it comes down to personal preference.

For those who want to keep an eye on their pets when they’re not around then a camera could be just what your looking for. These Black Friday deals on cameras have something to suit every budget.

Conclusion:

This Black Friday, treat your feline companion to the best in cat care and entertainment without breaking the bank. Whether it’s a cozy bed, interactive toys, premium food, or cutting-edge gadgets, there’s a deal waiting for every cat owner in the UK. Don’t miss out on the purr-fect opportunity to make this Black Friday special for your furry friend. Happy shopping!

The Best Names for Black Cats

The Best Names for Black Cats

When it comes to deciding on a name for your black cat it can be tricky. Will you choose a name based on their dramatic, strong appearance? Or will you pick a name that represents their mysterious nature? Plus there are so many famous names out there that would be perfect for a black cat. One of the benefits of a black cat (and there are plenty) is that only they can pull off certain names.

It might be the ex-teacher in me but names conjure up all sorts of thoughts and feelings. Ask any teacher how they pick a name for their own child and they will always says it’s related to the kids they taught. They will stay away from any names they associate with the ‘naughty’ kids. The same applies to picking a name for a cat.

Luckily, I’ve had the pleasure of looking after lots of beautiful black cats at The Great Catsby over the years. So picking a name would be easy as they’re all good cats. Some of those names really stand out and suit those cats, I couldn’t imagine them with any other name.

Anyway, I thought I’d share some of the best names I’ve come across. Not just from guests at The Great Catsby but from film and TV. Hopefully this list of names for black cats will give you some inspiration next time to add a black cat to your family.

10 reasons why everyone should own a black cat

10 reasons why everyone should own a black cat

As the proud owner of a black cat, I can highly recommend them to everyone. However, unfortunately, they aren’t popular pets due to their colour. The RSPCA reports that black cats are harder to rehome than any other cats. Apparently, people overlook black cats due to superstitious reasons and the fact that they don’t look good on Instagram! Seriously if that is a real reason then those people don’t deserve a cat. Anyway, in honor of National Black Cat Day (27th October 2019) here are my top ten reasons why you need a black cat in your life.

1. Black cats are excellent at playing hide and seek

black cats at The Great Catsby cat hotel

All cats are good at hiding but turn out the lights and you’ll have hours of fun trying to find your black cat. They know just how to camouflage themselves in a dark room.

2. A real-life mini panther

Who wouldn’t want a big cat to call their own? With a black cat you have your own mini panther in your house! Personally, I think just being able to say you have a mini panther is the only reason but if you need more persuading then read on.

3. Black is beautiful!

Black is elegant, classic and timeless, not just in the fashion world but in the cat world too! A black cat will compliment your decor and your outfits. Plus you’ll always look fabulous with a sleek black cat by your side.

4. Black cats look great on camera

Despite what the ‘Instagrammers’ say black cats look amazing in photos. I’ve been fortunate enough to photograph plenty of black beauties at The Great Catsby and I’m yet to find one that doesn’t look good. With the right lighting, you can show off their fabulous features.

5. Cat hair don’t care

If you hate the thought of your clothes being covered in cat hair then get a black cat! You won’t even notice their fur on you.

6. Famous black cats

There are a number of famous black cats in literature, TV and more recently on Instagram of all places! I’m sure Cole, from Cole and Marmalade, would disagree with anyone who said he wasn’t ‘Instagramable’ and so would his 641k followers!

7. Black cat names

a happy black and white cat

Naming any cat can be tricky but black cats, have a range of names that only they can pull off. Some popular names are Lucky, Sooty, Ebony, Onyx, Shadow, and Vader. Or you could opt for a famous black cat, like Felix, Salem, Bagheera or Sylvester. If you need more convincing about black cat names, head over to the blog post with over 80 names for black cats.

8. 50 shades of black

Well, there aren’t actually 50 shades (I don’t think) but black cats are all different. Whether it’s black smoke, white and black, a prominent Tuxedo, auburn black or everything in between. Each cat will have its own unique mark or mustache!

9. What beautiful eyes you have!

Along with the different colours and markings black cats also come in a range of eye colours that just seem to pop against their fur.

10. A black cat will be your best friend

a loving black cat

I am yet to meet a black cat that doesn’t love a fuss and attention. They are all so incredibly loving that it would be hard to resist their charm.

I have been very lucky to have so many black cats in my life at The Great Catsby. It’s always a pleasure getting to know each and every one.

Pet Portrait Illustraitions – Unique Cat Portraits for Cat Lovers

Pet Portrait Illustraitions – Unique Cat Portraits for Cat Lovers

As a small business owner, I’m always on the lookout for other small businesses that I can support.  It’s not easy going it alone, stepping out of our comfort zones to be our own bosses. So when I spot a unique business, especially a cat-related one, I get all excited!  That’s exactly what happened when I spotted an energetic and modern pet portrait artist! Her cat portraits are bold and they make awesome gifts for cat owners like me! I contacted Chloe, the artist behind Pet Portrait Illustration to find out how she creates these unique cat portraits.

Can you tell me about a little bit more about Pet Portrait Illustration?

I create bespoke Pet Portraits using Gouache Paint and Indian Ink for bold, contemporary illustrations that capture your Pet’s character. As a freelance artist, I used to get the odd Pet Portrait commission every now and then which I would do in a much more traditional style with oil paint.

How did you start doing pet portraits?

About two Christmases ago in 2017 my very last-minute boyfriend decided he wanted Pet Portraits for a few of his family members…with about 5 days to go! There was no way oil paint would dry in time, so I tried out a very different sort of approach on a plain white background using bright complementary colours.

I posted the three Portraits on my facebook page and got a really great response! A few months after that I had enough interest and Portraits in my portfolio to create the Pet Portrait Illustration brand.

A portrait of a white and tabby cat by Pet Portrait Illustrations

Talk me through the process, how long does it take to create a bespoke illustration? Would you need to see my cat to create the portrait?

I always work from photographs, so as amazing as it is when I get to meet my subjects it’s by no means necessary! I don’t even need a ‘Perfect’ photo – I pride myself on being able to work from multiple reference images to capture your Pet at their very best.

Your Bespoke Commission will always start with an image consultation via social media or Etsy. Here you can upload your images and I will give feedback as to what would make the best illustration and advise if I need any more to get an accurate representation of their features and markings.

Once I’m happy that I have enough to get the best results possible, I draw the outline of your Pet’s figure in pencil and gradually build up the colours using the gouache paint. This is a great medium for layering and dries super fast, so I can be quite free about the marks I make and experiment with colour to see what’s going to make the whole piece ‘pop’.

The finishing touch is a black ink outline which is definitely the riskiest part as it can be quite unpredictable but it’s so much fun!

I first spotted you at a live event at Bents Garden Centre. What happens at a live event?

‘Live’ Events are where I pop-up in venues in different cities around the country and draw people’s pets while they watch. Again, I don’t have to see your Pet, just photographs, but I often do get to meet them as most of the venues I tend to work in are Dog-Friendly!

I love doing ‘Live’ Pop-Ups as I’m normally on my own in the studio so it’s great to meet my customers face to face and hear all the wonderful stories about the relationship they share with their Pet.

Do you have any other live events coming up?

Yes! My next Pop-Up is actually in two days time (18th October 2019) at M&S in Liverpool Church St. as part of the Curated Makers ‘Made Local Pop-Up’ which should be very exciting. I do offer 1-hour slots on the day where I will create a portrait of your pet. The slots are usually £40 on the day, but if you pre-book before the event it’s just £35 for your unique cat (or dog) portrait.

I can’t reveal the one after that BUT I work very closely with Megan Jones, the founder of Curated Makers and wherever she goes I tend to follow! Her business is fantastic and champions small independent creatives based in the North, bringing them into big retailers on the High Street. You can find her on Instagram and Facebook @curatedmakers

How can I get one of your illustrations? Is it just through a live event?

‘Live’ Events are fabulous and I love doing them, however, the added bonus for me is that I’m able to promote my regular commission packages and reach new customers in new places (social media is fantastic but sometimes it’s better to get out and about in the real world!).

Over the past 2 years, I’ve developed a range of Commission styles and sizes to suit all budgets, and you can find examples of these and purchase your Bespoke Commission via my Instagram, Facebook , Etsy or my website www.petportraitillustration.co.uk. As much as I use the word ‘We’ when referring to my brand, it’s only ever me who you’ll be speaking to, so from initial enquiry through to finishing touches on your Illustration I’m proud to say I offer a truly personal service.

Finally, cats or dogs – which do you prefer to draw?

Ooooh that’s a tough one! I love drawing Pets that have unusual quirks and distinctive markings, but even before I started doing Pet Portraits I thought that Cats usually look like pieces of art already.

Chloe stocks an ever-expanding range of readymade prints, greetings cards and gift wrap featuring her illustrations. The full range is available through Etsy. However, if anyone wants a nosey at the cards in real life I have a selection of some of the cat print cards which I will be sending out to some very special people.

Cattitude Box – The subscription box for cats and their feline-loving owners

Cattitude Box – The subscription box for cats and their feline-loving owners

Subscription boxes are the latest craze sweeping the nation. Whether it’s meal preparations or luxury household items there’s a monthly subscription box out there. When I heard that there was a new cat subscription box especially for us crazy cat ladies, I had to find out more. I recently interviewed Farah Radford, the founder of Cattitude Box, just after her appearance at Cat Extravaganza in London earlier this month.  I wanted to know more about her Cat Subscription business and why Cattitude Box is ‘purrfect’ for cats and their ‘pawrents’.

Can you tell me about a little bit more about your business?

Cattitude Box is a monthly subscription box for cat ladies and their cats. Every month you get a box full of goodies for you and your cats to share! You can also buy a one-off box for yourself or a gift box for a special cat loving friend. The branding of the website was left monochrome to raise awareness of the fact that the RSPCA sees more black and black & white cats come into its care than any other colour of cat, (partly because people think they don’t look good in photos)! We also donate a portion of our profit to Bury’s Stray Cat Fund. Set in Bury St. Edmunds, they are an independent cat sanctuary who have been looking after cats and kittens for over 40 years.

How did it all start?

It actually started with a bit of a joke really. I had a subscription to a monthly beauty and lifestyle box. Whenever the box arrived my cats were more excited than I was – mainly because they get to sit in the box. It was a small box but as you know if it fits they sit! Sometimes they’d even steal items from the boxes. One time Muffin stole a makeup sponge that came in the box and started chasing it around the house like a football. She kept it in her special hiding place for weeks. My husband jokingly said “shame they don’t send anything for Muffin, she is their biggest fan! A nice catnip toy would be nice! And what if your eyeliner thingy had a cat on it. Why do they all have to be all boring pink and gold”. I looked at him as he changed the TV channel and said: “you know what, for the first time in your life you’ve said something useful”. Maybe there should be a box for both the cats and cat mums!”

I did some research and found there were a few UK subscription boxes for just cats but nothing that was for both cats and the cat owners. There was definitely a gap in the market. I was talking to some friends about this idea I had and they said how I had a great eye for quirky cat-themed products. A lot of my friends are cat ladies and because I travel a lot, I tend to come across cat themed items during my travels and always get them little souvenirs. Think of Cattitude Box like a friend who knows your love for cats and sends you quirky cat gifts for you and your cats every month.

Cattitude box is the purrfect subsctiption box for cat ladies and cats

What makes a crazy cat lady?

Oh you know, different things. The media obviously portray us as lonely single women with 18 cats who shout at other people and never leave the house! But it’s often the simple things that you do for your cats, often without realising. You take more photos of your cats than yourself. You are covered by cat hair all the time, you say goodbye to your cats while leaving home, and get sad nearer your holiday as you’ll miss your cats. Or you just simply love your cat more than other people. Us cat ladies are more similar than we think. We laugh at all the same cat memes. We watch the same cat videos on YouTube. We all want to adopt all the unfortunate cats if we could. We also look at things with cat reference on them and smile.

I don’t think being a crazy cat lady is a bad thing. We should embrace our crazy cat lady status because not everyone gets to be lucky enough to be cat mums.

There is definitely a stigma around the term “crazy cat lady” and I think it’s time we cat ladies should own it. We should be totally proud of our cat lady status. It’s cool to be a crazy cat lady or a crazy cat dad (I know my husband is definitely one!). Speaking of, we are also doing a special cat dad gift box for Father’s Day so the crazy cat men don’t feel left out!

Are you a crazy cat lady, and if so what is the craziest thing you’ve done for your cats?

I’m 100% a crazy cat lady. My black and white cat Muffin – who was the inspiration behind the black and white theme of Cattitude Box, has also been through a lot and is a very brave girl. I think the craziest (and also the stupidest) thing I did was run to the vets after donating blood to pick up my cat.

Bit of a back story – my cat Muffin was very ill as a kitten and at one point kept having blood in her stool. We had to leave her with the vet overnight to do an endoscopy so that they can find out what was wrong with her. I also donated blood on the very same day and like they do, after the blood donation they told me not to do any exercise for the day. As soon as I got out from there I got a phone call from the vet and I actually ran to the vet to get her (I lived in a small town and everything was walking distance). The vet nurse was telling me about the procedure and findings and I fainted sitting on the chair while talking to her(because of the blood donation and the running etc). My husband was out of town so they had to call a friend to pick me up. The vet nurse was like “Mrs Radford came to pick up her cat who had an endoscopy done today. We have just told her that her cat has colitis and she fainted. She is awake now but could you please come to pick her up?” Muffin had a steroid injection and her food was changed and she was fine afterward. but it became a running joke that I’m a crazy cat lady who faints at the vet after she’s told the cat is ill.

What do your friends and family think about your crazy cat loving ways?

They joke about it of course but they also spam me with every cat meme they come across on the internet so I can’t really complain! My mother was a little upset after I got the third cat instead of a grandchild for her!

What should every crazy cat lady have?

Lint rollers. Lots of them. They’re a lifesaver – especially when you get dressed up to go to a meeting and the cat(s) choose to sit on you! And the next thing is probably a subscription to Cattitude Box to share with their cats.

How do you decide what to include in your boxes?

Being a cat lady definitely helps to curate cat-Tastic items for my cat ladies! We partner with independent artists and creators to design custom items. We often commission special custom items just for the boxes. All the food that we choose to go in our boxes are Grain-free and very gentle for the kitties. Our boxes are very much for the cat ladies by the cat ladies.

I get inspiration for Cattitude boxes from everywhere but especially from my travels. One of the countries I thought was really cool for cats is Japan. My friend Mikato is visiting her hometown in Japan at the moment and regularly sending me photos of quirky cat items for a Japanese themed Cattitude box.

10 Ways To Love Your Cat

10 Ways To Love Your Cat

I think it goes without saying that we all love our cats but how do we tell them that we love them? Although I’m sure my some cats understand when we talk to them, especially when they meow back to answer us. However, there are some simple things we can do to show cats we love them in a way that they can understand.

Here are 10 ways I show love to my own cats plus every cat in my care.

*Please note this post contains affiliate links*

1. Know your cat’s favourite spots

All cats enjoy to be stroked but some have a preference as to where. It could be the top of their head, under the chin, behind their ears or even on their back at the base of the tail. Spend time with your cat getting to know which they prefer. If you’re not sure, your cat will let you know! They’ll gently nudge you or move to make sure you’re in the perfect spot.

2. Slow blink at your cat

A slow blink is the ultimate cat sign for trust. If they are comfortable they will slow blink at each other (and humans). A slow blink back at them tells them that you trust them, feel safe and are comfortable in their presence. This is one of the first things I do when a new cat comes to stay. I sit with the cat, at a distance, and slow blink to help settle the cat. Try giving your cat a slow blink next time it looks at you.

3. Provide a suitable environment for your cat

Indoor cats, in particular, need lots of stimulation to stop them from getting bored. A bored cat can display signs of depression, aggression and behaviour problems. One way to counter this is to provide places for them to scratch climb, hide and observe the world from up high. A new cat tower, shelves and/or suitable scratch post will help to show them how much you care. Although an empty cardboard box will be appreciated too!

4. Treat your cat to some catnip

I use a premium quality dried catnip which usually has a positive reaction from the cats. Not all cats will react to catnip, some aren’t affected at all. Whereas some cats will lick it, roll around in it or go crazy kicking at their toys and running around. Catnip is definitely a treat for those who respond to it. This article from Your Cat Magazine explains more about what Catnip is.

5. Encourage your cat’s natural behaviours

Cats love to pounce and stalk its a natural instinct for them. Provide toys that promote these instincts. I use a range of toys with my own cats and cats in my care. I like to mix it up so they don’t get bored but you could use a feather or toy on a wand, a laser or an automatic teaser like the *Frolicat one in the video.

6. Groom your cat

Cats take pride in their appearance, they will spend hours grooming and cleaning themselves. If you groom your cat, with with a brush or just strokes your cat might lick or groom you to return the favour. You can’t force a cat to lick you but if you’re patient and don’t make a fuss when that scratchy tongue licks you then they will be more likely to repeat it in the future.

7. Snuggle up with your cat

Who doesn’t love to curl up on the sofa with their favourite being? Cats certainly do, the more you let them sit on your knee or lie next to you the more they feel loved. If you want to you could always let them sleep on your bed with you. I feel a word of caution needs to be added here though…once you let a cat snooze on you, your stuck in that position ha ha. Cat parents tend not to move for fear of disturbing our little fur babies.

8. Interact with your cat

Playing with a kitten is easy, they are full of energy and love playing. However, all cats need some stimulation and interaction too. Find out what kind of play your cat prefers, some like to fetch or play with small balls. Others enjoy playing with a catnip toy, Myshkas Toybox and Pretty Kitty Cat make our favourite toys. A cat with attention, interaction and stimulation will definitely feel loved.

9. Provide a comfortable sleeping spot for your cat

Cats love sleeping, on average they spend around 12-16 hours a day sleeping, and if they’re not eating or playing then they are generally lounging around. Some cats won’t necessarily use a cat bed but they will lie on a blanket on the sofa or sleep on top of a fridge or cupboard. My own cats love sleeping on their RHR Quality Cat Tree, it’s big enough for all three of them to share including Nala, the Maine Coon.

10. Keep your cat mentally and physically active

Domestic cats have the luxury of a human slave to cater to their every need. However, as cat parents, we need to make sure we do the best possible job with our cats and not let them get overweight or bored. One way to maintain our cats’ health and wellbeing is to provide a range of games to keep them active. *Catit Design Senses Circuit in the video, is a popular game to keep them active.

How do you show your cats you love them? Let me know in the comments below, I’d love to add them to the list.
